About Us

Reflection...
We are 3 guys, who until the premature death of one of our number, used to be called 'The Couriers'. We were well known in and around the Derby area for over 25 years, not solely as a 'Beat Group' but as a very versatile dance band, playing for dinner dances, weddings, parties and social functions at all the major hotels and clubs in Derby and the surrounding Derbyshire area.

After a break of 6 years, we decided to reform as 'Reflection', playing popular music from the 1960's to present day. Some of the music from 'The Couriers' has been passed forward to 'Reflection' along with many 'new' numbers introduced to our playlist.

It's been great for us to reform and if you decide to book Reflection you know from our history that you are booking three very experienced musicians.

Dave Turner (Drums & Vocals)...
I
come from a very musical background. My father was a leading Alto Sax and Clarinet professional and semi-pro musician in Derby for many years.

Although no formal musical training I gained all my knowledge about the business from my dad. It was during my last year at school when I joined a group of lads and formed a Skiffle Group for the school music festival. From there I went on to form a group in the style of ‘Lonnie Donegan’ called ‘The Four Diamonds’.

In 1960 the group changed its name to the ‘FD5’ because of the addition of a female vocalist. During this time the group became very popular playing mostly private functions in all the hotels and clubs in and around the Derby area.

In 1964 after various personnel changes the group changed its name to ‘The Couriers’ a name which remained till 1997 when the group disbanded due to the untimely death of Roger Garrett the groups lead guitarist, vocalist and keyboard player.

After an absence from the music scene for 5 years I and the remaining members of the Couriers reformed as ‘Reflection’ now a three piece group playing covers of most of the favourite groups from the 60’s to the present day.

Dave Munro (Keyboard, Guitar & Vocals)...
My music career started in the late 50’s with piano lessons but it was a tall order to match the standards set by my Mother and Grandfather although it gave me the necessary grounding to take my music further.

In the early 60’s I turned to the guitar that my brother had bought me and, as was the trend, I was itching to set up a ‘group’, which I did with some school pals. With a few changes of personnel, ‘Binomial Distribution’ (what a mouthful) was my first band that performed on gigs. This was an invaluable learning curve of buying equipment that you couldn’t afford, understanding vocal harmonies, balancing sounds and working as a team.

On starting work in the mid 60’s I teamed up with some lads that became ‘Chapter 6’ and over a few years we gained a good reputation and became very well known in the Derby area. We had quite a diverse pad whereby classic harmony 60’s numbers were reserved for the clubs but turned on the heavy stuff when appropriate.

‘Chapter 6’ disbanded in the late 60’s and I joined ‘Travelling Band’ and enjoyed a couple of years playing well known standards as well as one of my own compositions.

My next opportunity in 1972 was to join a well established band, ‘The Couriers’, initially to provide vocals in place of my current ‘Reflection’ drummer colleague, Dave Turner’, who was absent due to a broken leg. On his return I joined the band permanently for the next 25 years (Phew!) The early years were a challenge for me as it was essential to be able to sight read music as a very wide spectrum was covered. I came into my own when arranging the ‘pop’ music and vocal harmonies which became our strength. With the death of my dear friend and band colleague, Roger Garrett, ‘The Couriers’ had to disband after a 33 year history.

A few years later we, the 3 ex ‘Couriers’ – Dave, John and myself, decided to start up as ‘Reflection’. This required a few changes for me which was to introduce the keyboard and commit to much more lead guitar work and I’m enjoying every minute of it. I hope you do too!

My music interests extend to song writing, midi creation, computer software sequencing and recording.

John Revill (Bass & Vocals)...
I started my musical career in the late 60’s learning to play the guitar (as we all did in the 60’s) having professional tuition for reading and playing. It was in the early 70’s that I was asked to play bass for an 18 piece big band, as there was a shortage of reading bass players at that time. I found playing the bass very rewarding as the instrument gives depth and warmth to the rhythm section (...and 4 strings are a lot easier than 6) and from that day on stayed with the bass.

As a reading bass player in the 70’s word soon got around and I was asked to dep in several bands working the clubs & hotels, and eventually ended up on the Mecca circuit. Later in the 70’s I decided to expand my musical career and enrolled at the Nottingham College of Music to study theory to grade 8. By this time I was doing a residency with a 4 piece band and was asked if I would be interested in working a summer season, so I decided to turn professional and we did a summer season at Butlins Minehead which led to Pontins on the Isle of Wight, then Warner’s on Hayling Island. During that time I backed many top artists and was eventually asked if I would play bass with Burt Weedon’s backing band, it was great fun for years but decided that it was time to settle down and stay local.

In the mid-eighties I joined a semi pro band called The Couriers, a very well established and versatile four piece dance band playing for golf clubs, dinner dances, civic functions, Masonics, you name them we played them until the late 90’s when due to illness we lost a very dear member of the band. We stopped playing for a few years as we were not sure which direction to take as we would never be the same band again. Eventually the three of us decided to reform as a trio and call ourselves ‘Reflection’.

And that brings me up to the present time, we are enjoying playing together again, and after all these years the musical dedication and enthusiasm are still there as you will hear in our music.
